SUMMARY:Climate Walk Lecture #6 - Climate Change Communication & Socio-Ecological Transformation (“We Conn_Act”)
DESCRIPTION:We have so far spoken about four of our five project dimensions – “we walk”\, “we listen” (research)\, “we talk” (education)\, “we create” (media-art) -\, but not explicitly about mobilizing and getting people together for a common cause! For what we term “connActing” people\, that is bringing people together through an emancipatory agenda\, we need two particular things. \nFirst\, we need to be able to reach an audience\, to communicate Climate Change and the Climate Crisis. For dealing with this issue\, we have invited two speakers elaborating on the issue of how to communicate the Climate Crisis in a meaningful way. The second part of this class is dedicated to speakers sketching out approaches for overcoming and dealing with the Climate Crisis. Here\, we will talk about prospects of aocio-ecological transformation\, about what makes the imperial mode of living so persisent\, and about how to fight for of a good life for all. \n\nSession 1 (16.45-18.15):\n\nLecture 1: Andreas Scherlofsky (University of Vienna): tba\nLecture 2: Gabriel Baunach (Climaware): Climate Change Communication: How (not) to speak about the climate crisis!\n\n\nSession 2 (18.30-20.00):\n\nPanel Discussion “Climate Crisis and the Socio-Ecological Transformation” (with)\n\nUlrich Brand (University of Vienna)\, Manuel Grebenjak (Stay Grounded Campaigner)\, Camila Moreno (HU Berlin)\n\n\nAll the classes can be accessed through a recurring Zoom link open for everyone:\nhttps://univienna.zoom.us/j/99951349832?pwd=eS9HbzBxSXZIaHlKV2JhcFVWM09sZz09\n\nAfter the session\, the recording can be found here: www.sprint.climatewalk.eu/cwlecturerecordings (but please note that it may take some days until it is available)\n\nWith regards to access to and grading of the lecture series:\nAll the classes can be accessed through a recurring Zoom link open for everyone: https://univienna.zoom.us/j/99951349832?pwd=eS9HbzBxSXZIaHlKV2JhcFVWM09sZz09\nBesides\, studens of the University of Vienna may want to register for the course. First\, we want to raise the question whether and in which forms art helps us to tackle Climate Change: What role does art play\, what potentials lie in it for communicating and depicting the Climate Crisis? We will also shed light on the question of how Climate Change is commonly visualized and imagined through visuals. Beyond\, we will look at the potentials and merits of visual storytelling in the face of nature conservation and climate action. \n\nSession 1 (16.45-18.15):\n\nLecture 1: Katharina Gsöllpointner (University of Applied Arts Vienna): The Climate\, the Digital\, the Artist\, and their Work\nLecture 2: Dorothea Born (University of Vienna): Images and Imaginations of Climate Change\n\n\n\nSession 2 (18.30-20.00):\n\n\nLecture 1: Heidi Dumreicher (oikodrom): tba\nLecture 2 (pre-recorded for wachting it @home): Christine Sonvilla and Marc Graf (Sonvilla-Graf OG\, wildlife photographers): Visual Storytelling in conservation\n\n\nWith regards to access to and grading of the lecture series:\nAll the classes can be accessed through a recurring Zoom link open for everyone: https://univienna.zoom.us/j/99951349832?pwd=eS9HbzBxSXZIaHlKV2JhcFVWM09sZz09 \nBesides\, studens of the University of Vienna may want to register for the course. SUMMARY:Webinar - Studying the Environment in/and the Humanities: US in the Spotlight
DESCRIPTION:***Due to technical problems\, the webinar was postponed from the 8th to the 15th of April.*** \nWebinar by the University of Ostrava \nWith an eye to the rapidly growing field of environmental humanities\, the webinar will offer diverse takes on the US environment from the perspective of the humanities. They will examine the ways Californian writers helped form environmental movements and formulate their principles. \n\n\nIn a separate presentation\, John Steinbeck’s work will be scrutinized through ecocritical/ecofeminist lens. Last but not least\, the webinar will highlight how environmental racism and justice feature in contemporary African American literature and Hollywood production set in Louisiana\, a state ravaged by hurricanes and the petrochemical industry. \n\nSpeakers: Petr Kopecký\, Jan Beneš\, Parisa Changizi and Karla Rohová\n\n\nModerator: Petr Kopecký \nJoin directly via Zoom: https://cesnet.zoom.us/j/93225173461 \nMeeting ID: 932 2517 3461 \n\n\nThe webinar will be held in English.\nFor more information\, please click here. \n\n\n**********************************\nThe Climate Walk is a combined research\, education and media-art project by the Wanderers of Changing Worlds. SUMMARY:Climate Walk Lecture #3 - Climate Change Research across Disciplines (“We Listen”)
DESCRIPTION:You are still with us! That is beautiful!\nWhereas the first two classes of the Climate Walk Lecture have dealt with Climate Change more generally and with walking as a way of first-hand experiencing Climate Change and Changing Climates\, the third class deals with Climate Change research across different disciplines and universities – be it geography\, geoecology or sociology.\nAs we in our project believe that doing research is all about listening and carefully observing\, the third class comes under the header of “We Listen”. \nSlot 1 (16.45-18.15)\nLecture 1: Stephan Glatzel (University of Vienna): Peatland conservation and restoration mitigate climate change (Q & A session)\nStephan Glatzel is a Full Professor Geoecology at the University of Vienna. His main area of expertise is greenhouse gas release and uptake from peatlands. His contribution to peatland and greenhouse gas research is internationally well acknowledged and most of his above 90 publications are on peatland and land use related greenhouse gas research. SUMMARY:Climate Walk Lecture #2 - Research/Ethnography on Foot (“We Walk”)
DESCRIPTION:After having discussed the diversity and multiplicity of perspectives on Climate Change and Climate Change Research\, the second class – under the header of “We Walk!” – will deal with the heart of the Climate Walk’s methodological approach\, namely with walking! For sheding light on the potential and challenges of “research/fieldwork on foot”\, four brilliant speakers will share their considerations and experiences with regards to walking in and through rapidly changing landscapes. \n“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” (Chinese Proverb\, Laozi) \nSlot 1 (16.45-18.15)\nLecture 1: Tim Ingold (University of Aberdeen): Walking in a Weather-World (+ Q & A session)\nTim Ingold is Professor Emeritus of Social Anthropology at the University of Aberdeen. He has carried out fieldwork among Saami and Finnish people in Lapland\, and has written on environment\, technology and social organisation in the circumpolar North\, on animals in human society\, and on human ecology and evolutionary theory. His more recent work explores environmental perception and skilled practice. Ingold’s current interests lie on the interface between anthropology\, archaeology\, art and architecture.
